The World Handicap System (WHS) is a unified system for golfers of all abilities, allowing them to compete fairly on any course worldwide. Introduced in 2020 by the USGA and R&A, it combines six previous handicap systems into one, using a course rating and slope system to adjust for different course difficulties. A player’s handicap index is calculated based on the best 8 of their last 20 scores. This system ensures that golfers’ performance is consistently and accurately measured, promoting inclusivity and a level playing field in competitions, regardless of where or under what conditions they play.
